This movie bridged the theatrical gap between the original Star Trek crew and those of the Next Generation. The story involves a mysterious region of space called the Nexus where time seems to stand still. Captain Kirk becomes trapped in this void - where he lives happily with his Great Dane, Butler.
Allegedly, the script had the Dane named Jake. But Shatner requested the dog be named after a pet Shatner recently lost.
